Colour is everything. What would food and fashion be without colour? Nothing but tasteless. The brighter the berry the more exquisite the taste. This was defiantly the case at LondonFashion Week with the most eye catching fashion enthusiasts displaying their hugeappetite for colour. Somerset house was scattered with berry bright colours which created a light, fun and energetic atmosphere which is what fashion and food are all about. Eachindividual portrays their own personality and style through their expression of colouredclothing. They are the leaders of the colour trends adding passion and creative juices tothe new seasons.Fruit and vegetables of the season...

Year two fashion communication- Moving image

For moving image we were required to compose a two minute fashion film for Topshop inspired by the 1980's. My film 'Black and white' focuses on the racial difficulties and mixed opinion at the time particularly seen in skin head cults. I wanted to incorporate historical aspects of the era through the use of projections on the body and also the progression of time which can be seen through the second location of a transport system. I felt this also brought a modern and contemporary feel to the film.

Through the use of location, models, styling, sound, hair and makeup I insured my film was current and accessible to Topshops current target market and outgoing exciting style.

Initial concept

Historic
Reflect aspects of the 80’s but quite indirectly
- Subtly in hair and make up
- Contrasting styling
- Location
- Concept

The projections help to convey the 80’s influence and add more context and awareness to the film.
Set in the modern day

Transportation and movement in time is explored through the physical movement in the film. Glasgow tube station also uses fluorescent lights which could potentially lead to interesting visual effects added later at during the editing process. I plan to add a black and white effect to also explore the time period of the 80’s and create a bit more historic reference. The black and white effect also relates to the idea of newspapers and fact which I would like to convey in my projection scenes with records from the 80’s seen.

Economic
Age range 16-25 year olds
Female

Bold
Fashionable and interested in past trends
Limited- very expensive styling creating a limited availability
Seasonal- Winter with fur coats

This is emphasized by the model choice, the styling and the location

Who owns it- Arcadia (Peter Robinson)
Who runs it- Philip Green
Type of company-LFW, Known in Britain, work with charities
Turnover- £2.8b in previous years Topshop and Topman

Models
I have chosen to use blank canvas new faces as models as I want to have a fresh and youthful approach to my film. Both models study drama so I know they will feel confident in front of the camera which is essential to the success of my film.

The models also reflect the type of girls who would purchase the range I am showcasing for Topshop. This is important as the target market have to see themselves wearing the clothing in order to then buy it.

I have chosen two girls as I want to convey the cult feeling of friendship that is not sexual.

Sound
Grinderman/ U.L.I.K.E Hyper Worm Tamer

Grinderman is an alternative rock band from london. Members are Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey and Jim Sclavunos. The song “U.L.I.K.E Hyper Worm Tamer” was released on the 22nd of November 2010.

I chose this soundtrack because I wanted to incorporate the idea of working with current music that has the influence of the 80s style. I wanted a hard hitting strong backing to my film as it adds depth and makes the film more memorable. It also creates a

The heavy beat and strong rhythm should allowed me to cut and edit my film to the beat creating a catchy and more effective film. Although this music will result in more editing I feel it is necessary to appeal to a younger audience and also to reflect the style of music in the 80’s.

Edit
I plan to use imovie to edit my film. I feel it is important to achieve a flow between my studio and location shots which will require a little bit more attention whilst editing. I will also need to make sure my music is consistent with the film and that is emphasizes the action.

Credits will be featured at the end briefly to give recognition to the models, make-up artists and the sound track that has been used. I wish to keep this minimal which shouldn't be a problem because not many people will be involved in production.

As previously explained I plan to use a black and white effect to relate to the historic influence of the film. The skin heads were known to be stereotypically racist so the black and white edit relates to the theme of skin colour and contrast. The effect also creates some drama and tension which makes the film seem more exciting and atmospheric. Newspapers are printed in black and white relating to the idea of fact and truth.

Part 1

Review the ‘Top 10 Fashion Films of the Season’.

1. Barneys New York fashion film “Wild things” :

Barneys New York fashion film “Wild things” takes a fun and unusual approach to showcase their Spring 2013 look book. The playful attitude of Kinga Rajzak (the model) really helps convey an energetic mood and atmosphere to the viewer through her interaction with the heavy bass soundtrack and playful illustrations featured in the film. Adding to the success of the film the collection is also very wearable despite the bold use of colour and pattern allowing the viewer to really connect with the film which is immensely important.  As a whole the film really fits the purpose of appealing to the customer yet it is displayed in a bright and creative way.

2. Kenzo Resort 2013 Electric Jungle :

Mat Maitland’s brings a great sense of energy in Kenzo’s resort 2013 ‘electric jungle’. This can be seen through his vivid use of colour and bold pattern featured thought the film. Maitland also achieves this through an intense use of lighting and a heavy beat in the sound tack. These techniques may be seen as over powering however the contrasting naturalistic movement of the model allows a harmonious balance that leaves the viewer hungry for more.

3. Lavin Summer 2013 Campaign :

The Lavin Summer 2013 Campaign directed by Terry Richardson exudes Luxury with a seemingly effortless style. An almost humorous approach is taken as the film is interrupted with a Skype call from Alber Elbaz who commentates on the “absolute dream”  he sees before him. The juxtaposition of having a informal Skype call with a high end showcase for a designer collection causes the film to be more relatable to the viewer and adds fun approach to the clean cut minimal ambiance trying to be created. A calm mood is created through the models slow naturalistic movement, blue toned lighting and the soft jungle themed music which is refreshing allowing the clothing to look highly desirable.

4. Lane Crawford spring/summer 2013 by Nick Knight :

Lane Crawford spring/summer 2013 by Nick Knight is visually arresting. A static atmosphere is created though the stylized visual and audio elements. The models aggressive strut and digitally produced styling is seen to shatter creating a highly technical visual display. A strong fast paced techno soundtrack is also used to intensify the modern atmosphere being created. Overall the film is successful in captivating the audience with it’s stunning effects yet the Lane Crawford represents many designers and the clothing may not be seen as the main focus of the film.

5. McQ Alexander McQueen Autum/ Winter 2013 :

Roger Deckker directed Alexander McQueen’s Autumn/ Winter 2013 menswear and womenswear collection. The film is broken with an unclear storyline which draws the viewer in. A power struggle is created through the models panic and sharp movement again focusing on the theme of uncertainty and fear. The styling understandably is simple and clean cut with minimal use of colour and focuses on texture. The music featured at the beginning is slow and there is a natural use of strings which then develops into an uptempo beat to engage the audience. This all leads to silence and a blank screen creating mystery and confusion.

Select 5 music promos hat you consider could work equally well as Fashion Films.

1. Miley Cyrus - We cant stop
2. Iggy azalea - Murda Bizness
3. Robin Thicke- Blurred lines
4. Azealia Banks -Licorice
5. Beyonce - Countdown

5 Music promo’s that work well as fashion films

1. Miley cyrus- “We cant stop”

Diane Martel directed Miley Cyrus music video “We cant stop”. This video has been criticized by the media for being outrageous and disturbing yet it works well as a fashion film as it is so visually creative and thought provoking. A rebellious and young mood is created through the sexual movements and exposure of her tongue frequently.  This mood is also created through the styling as it is very extravagant with heavy emphasis on the accessories and minimal coverage in the clothing. The video has caused a debate and challenged opinions through the content in a interesting and controversial way which is important in the success of a fashion film.

2. Iggy Azalea- “Murda Bizness”

Iggy Azalea “Murda Bizness” directed by Alex/2Tone would be accepted as a fashion film as it features young girls dancing and preforming to violent R&B rap lyrics creating an interesting juxtaposition. The decision to involve children creates a sense of innocence and vulnerability allowing the lyrics to seem less aggressive and more humorous. The sickeningly sweet pageant dresses complete with bright colours and diamond decoration relates to the flashy gangster lifestyle associated with the lyrics. It is memorable to the viewer as it is a less common projection of rap music yet it is still enjoyable to watch. Overall the film causes mixed opinion in a visually intriguing way.

3. Robin Thicke- Blurred lines

Diane Martel directed Robbin Thicke’s ‘Blurred lines” video which explores issue of
sexuality in a fun and liberating way that is memorable to the viewer. It could work well as a fashion film as it explores social relevance and it includes interesting visuals combined with catchy up beat music. A lot of controversy has come from the models used in the film as they wear nude underwear/ very little clothing or clear pvc round their waists combined with very sexual movement throughout the performance which can be seen as risky. Another interesting feature about the film is the bold red text overlapping the images reading “#THICKE” and “#BLURRED LINES” this almost acts as a subliminal messaging to make the viewer remember the artist and song title which is unusual.

4. Azealia Banks- “Liquorice”

Rankin’s music video for Azealia Banks “Liquorice” focuses on the issue of race through the lyrics but it is also explored through the visuals. This allows the film to involve current social issues and still include stunning visuals. Rankin uses contrast to clash the heavy R&B lyrical content with the wild west themed styling which is thought provoking. The production is set in a desert which references the cowboys and indians racial conflict in the 19th Century which can be seen as a relevant factor to the video. Therefore a viewpoint and opinion is created from watching the film which is why it could potentially work as a fashion film.

5. Beyonce- “Countdown”

Beyonce’s “Countdown” video directed but Adrina Pretty could work well as a fashion film as it includes brilliant graphics and showcases clothing to a incredible and fitting soundtrack. The video involves diverse techniques ranging from stop motion film, overlapping images, use of silhouettes, repetition, fast forwarding and a few location changes which is visually appealing. Adding to this throughout the performance there were coloured backdrops, a bright and colourful wardrobe choice and an electric soundtrack that is remembered by the viewer. A energetic and flirtatious mood and atmosphere is created through all of these techniques allowing the film to remain in the viewers mind.

Choose 5 films from show studio that appeal to you and write about each of them.

1. The Royal College of Art’s MA graduate film:

The Royal College of Art’s MA graduate film by directors George Tsioutsias and Marlon Rueberg explores the concept of sexuality fantasy in a modern light captivating the viewer through powerful visuals. The use of a synthetic soundtrack intensifies the content creating impact on the viewer that this unfamiliar and that there is  a deeper meaning to what is being seen. The film ends with a tangled struggle of men on top of each other which contrasts to the previous image of a timid and gentle affectionate flirt between two figures.

2. “House of Waris: the plumage necklace”

Quentin Jones produced “House of Waris: the plumage necklace” featuring the jeweler Waris Ahluwalia allowing a playful and fun approach to the film. This has been done through the use of soft pastel colours and neutral tones throughout creating a fresh and clean idea to be projected. Again the music used is very innocent and catchy illustrating a electric feel. The stop motion technique adds a bit more substance to the light hearted film which is important as a bit of juxtaposition is incorporated. The film is a non familiar way to showcase jewelry which makes it very enjoyable and interesting to watch.

3. Eastern Promises

Eastern Promises by Marie Schuller is a flirtatious and highly intricate performance. The beautifully embellished garments are cleverly displayed by the use of light in the film. With a heavy emphasis on shadows and flashes of light the detail can be seen clearly which is important in promoting the clothing. The asian models elegant hand movements also help to create a very luxurious feel to the collection. Liam Paton’s composition for the film insures the collection current with a catchy off beat and sinister tone allowing a less innocent feel. As a result a highly successful film has been produced.

4.“Film punk: Kinesis”

Penny Tu and Joseph Lally’s film “Punk: Kinesis” explores the theme of Punk in a less traditional sense. The film seems to have a storyline with the model beginning nude with a head piece constructed of flowers, it then progresses resulting in her body to be fully covered in flowers. The sound track also develops from having a modern feel to then involve birds, waves and more natural sounds conveying progression. To portray the punk theme nature has deliberately been used to contrast with the stereotype of chains and aggressive behaviors which is refreshing and as a result makes the film more memorable.

5.“Punk: Untrue”

Nathaniel Brown’s concept for “Punk: Untrue” is a less common approach to punk yet it still conveys a sense of depth and frustration which can be associated with the movement. The performance shows a female figure lost in her thoughts, unsure of love, conveying depression through romance which most can relate to. The music accompanying the film helps intensify the feeling of uncertainty with a combination of different sounds such as wind, breathing, footsteps on the sand along with a soft piano which relates to the theme of romance. As a result the film leaves the viewer feeling emotionally impacted which makes the film so successful.

First year introduction to fashion communication

The theme of our magazine was monarchy which run consistently throughout every aspect of the magazine. Our brief was to create a magazine influenced by 'POP' magazine so we included fun, colourful and unusual approach to the layout and content of our magazine.

Front cover

Front cover of 'A' magazine

For the Front cover we decided to portray the idea of a playing card- in particular 'A' because it is the top card and reigns superiority over the others.

Advert

Initially we had planned for our advert to have a rich gold colour for our advert but financially it was out of reach. The plain white background was still effective as it creates a clean and eye catching statement about the university.
Editors letter

Editors letter

The editors note really just introduces the content of the magazine in a informal and alternative style.

Contributors page

For the contributors page again we took a royal approach and used stamps silhouettes to introduce the contributors of the magazine.

Feature 1

Royal Rejects
For our first feature we decided to write to some celebrities whom are seen to be royal in the public eyes.
We wanted to see how gracious they would be in their replies and if they would even take the time to reply. We decided to go to the head of aristocracy by asking the queen herself and actually got a reply which was unexpected.

Photoshoot 1

 Purple reign
Since we had already decided one of our photo shoots was going to be incredibly lavish and over the top we decided to have something completely different for the second shoot. We decided the styling should be a bit more contemporary and modern with the use of bright acid colours featuring the use of metallic.

A kaleidoscope effect was used as it related to the theme of royalty since many stain glass windows have regal content and we really liked the  repeat Patten that can be created. A juxtaposition effect can then be created by having the very rich and sophisticated feel for the second shoot.
The colours and editing style also help to highlight the influence of POP magazine as they are so new and extravagant.
Photoshoot 2
For our second shoot 'play for power' we decided to really highlight the theme with the use of regal colours and textures. To relate to POP we incorporated the idea of having a power struggle and to create more of a threatening and violent feel with the use of bruise make up to reflect the couples strive for superiority.
Interview 1

Jett Sweeny (Queen of high street)

Jett Sweeney, the assistant designer of H and M, agreed to an chat with us. In the interview we wanted to stay consistent with style of POP magazine with fun and unusual questions about how she personally felt regal.
Interview 2

Drag Queen (Don't be a drag just be a Queen)

POP can sometimes be very over the top and extravagant with bold content and interviews so we decided to interview someone with a glitzy and glamorous lifestyle. The Queen's of theatre really know how to put on a good show and how to shock their audiences which is exactly what happened in our interview.

Feature 2

Welcome to the kingdom

The final feature 'Welcome to the kingdom' is a map to all the regal places in Edinburgh and the borders where you can feel like part of royalty and really indulge yourself in your surroundings.
Back page
The pack page illustrates the different front covers available with the regal edition of the magazine in a similar style to POP as the reader has the option to pick the cover they like best. Creating more variety and choice for the reader.

What we would have done differently...
Overall we were all very happy with the way our magazine turned out and if we were given the option we would have added more pictures and expanded on our content. Specifically we would have wanted to include the full letter from her majesty which can be seen below.

As Heriot Watt has strong links with Central St Martins we were able to have a guest lecturer Hywel Davies come and speak to us about the initial thoughts for our magazine and to asses our final outcome.
Hywel gave us some positive feedback and stated he would 'pick up our magazine' which was encouraging to hear.

I can honestly say I loved my group and the project so cant wait to start fashion communication in 2nd year.

Goodbye school... hello Uni

6th year funny photo... such jokers

On the 1st of september 2012 I started University and moved into the new halls in Galashiels :

WORDS OF WISDOM.....

Take photo's. OK at the start it may be awkward to take photos seeing as no one knew each other but looking back on it now i'm so glad I did. Everyone has changed so much since freshers and its almost an ice breaker to talk to people you normally wouldn't have.

Be outgoing. There is no point in not getting involved and watching from the sidelines because you will miss out.

Be friendly. Its the easiest way to make friends and to start getting to know everyone.

Drinking. 'Down it freeessshhhhha!' Obviously drinking plays a part in freshers week. When meeting new faces it will hopefully make it less awkward.

Deadly mix

rainbow jelly shots fail

I would also like to add that the friends you make in the first few weeks are not necessarily going to be your best friends for the rest of the year. You will make new friends every day and will begin to spend more time with the people you have more in common with.

Galaween (Halloween in Galashiels ) PART 1
Halloween is one of the biggest events in Galashiels and as fashion students we like to be a little more creative when playing dress up... some of the best outfits included an alien, road kill, David Bowie, Audrey Hepburn, The Grinch and Cindy Lu.

In keeping with the fashion theme I dressed up as Karl Lagerfelds cat: Choupette

Good start to the night....

Zombie shots

For Halloween the next night I decided to go as Taylor swift... I have always been a massive fan- especially of her old work so dressing up as taylor from her music video 'You belong with me' directed by Roman White seemed the easiest to recreate.
